Some photos of climbing in Wadi Rum

The summit of Jebel Rum

Christine Preis came to Wadi Rum in the early spring of 2002 with a party of German climbers. Besides tackling a number of the classic routes, they put up an impressive number of short new routes from their camps in Wadi Maghrar and in the Barragh Canyon,as well as a couple of longer one. She has very kindly allowed me to use a number of her beautiful photos, both on this page and in a couple of other places in the website. You can read her account of their stay in Wadi Rum on her home page at http://www.christine-preis.de

One of their suggested routes up Jebel Rum is to take Sabbagh's Route up, sleep on the summit of the mountain, and then abseil down using Hammad's Route into Wadi Shelaali. This is effectively a great trip and is highly recommended by all specialists.

Moving away from Rum Village, the group camped in the valley christened "The Climbers' Restaurant" in Wadi Maghrar where they were some distance from the other visitors and where there were some "very interesting" possible climb routes. Their local climbing guides were Defallah Attayak and Attayak Aouda.

The routes are 1) Happy Birthday, 2) Fuer Geniesser, 3) Fliegender Perse, 4) Atieq's Route, 5) Reflektion, 6) Profitratte 7) Abseilung

Happy Birthday!

The company moved on to the Barragh Canyon, where they established the route Dance on Slings.

"Dance on Slings" in the Barragh Canyon - a 6c beginning!

And here - Ziegenstall, a series of top rope climbs

All in all, a very successful holiday. The Germans made a great impression in Wadi Rum, not least with their football match against the local school, and people there are hoping they will come again before too long.
