Two photos of Jebel Um el Biyara - the "Mother of Cisterns" : a hike to this mountain, while a great day out for hikers, should never be undertaken without a local guide

The climb to the Monastery "Ed Deir" can be considered an arduous one, but you are rewarded by some magnificent views, first over the Petra valley, and then over the Rift Valley of Wadi Araba.

Petra mountains with Wadi Araba clearly to be seen beyond them. It is very rare that Wadi Araba is so clear, usually it is lost in the haze and the mountains are what one sees, high on the horizon

I should like to thank Todd Bolen of Moshav Yad HaShmonah, D.N. Harei Yehuda, Israel for the use of his beautiful photos of the Petra Mountains from www.bibleplaces.com. Many thanks for this, Todd!
