PHOTOS OF JORDAN

The Kings' Highway,
Wadi Mujib, Kerak and Dana

These are "thumbnail" pictures. Click on them to open a larger version.

The viewpoint overlooking the "Grand Canyon" of Wadi Mujib

Do you remember that I said that the Kings' Highway was a difficult drive? Here are some more views of Wadi Mujib from the road. You can see the winding highway in the enlarged photos. Exploring the bottom of this spectacular canyon can involve wading or even swimming (see the photos below and the report on the Nature Reserve of Wadi Mujib and the guided trek "The Lost Trail to the Dead Sea")

In Hebrew Wadi Mujib is known as "Nahal Amon". It was the traditional boundary between the Biblical lands of Moab and Edom : Moab with its fertile fields, and Edom with its tumbling chaos of mountains. As you follow the Kings' Highway to the south, you pass through a region with thousands of years of history.

The Castle of Kerak

The view from the south west View towards the Dead Sea
from the Castle

It is easy to understand from these photos just how impressive a fortress Kerak was and that it was an important stage for the heliograph which sent messages from Egypt right up to the Turkish border. The next stage in the line towards the north was Jerusalem!

The Nature Reserve of Wadi Dana

(See the towns and sites of Jordan page)

The village is in a spectacular site, overlooking the protected Nature Reserve. The second photo is a beautiful one, (taken by Wilfried Colonna) of a village under the sun, but in fact most of these houses are empty.

Apart from the two small hotels in the village, which are quickly booked up in the holiday season, accommodation in Dana is in two specially arranged camp sites. This one shows the Rumana campsite.

A walk through Wadi Ghuweir which you can reach from the village of Mansura, on the road running from Shobuk to Qadisiyyeh. Notice the very great contrast in the vegetation at the top of the valley and at the bottom!

Acknowledgements

I should like to thank Todd Bolen of Moshav Yad HaShmonah, D.N. Harei Yehuda, Israel for the use of his beautiful photos of Kerak and Wadi Mujib from www.bibleplaces.com. Many thanks for this, Todd!
